The Central Bank of Ireland will host its first Financial System Conference over two days in Dublin this week, bringing together stakeholders from Ireland and across the EU to discuss and debate the driving forces shaping the financial system.
Supporting the Economy, Delivering for the Consumer is the theme of the conference, which will take place at the Aviva Stadium on Wednesday 2 and Thursday 3 November.
Over 300 consumer representatives, industry leaders, and international policymakers will discuss some of the key opportunities and challenges facing the system, including consumer protection, climate change, innovation, disruption and regulation.
Keynote speakers over the two days will include:
- Gabriel Makhlouf, Governor of Central Bank of Ireland
- Paschal Donohoe TD, Minister for Finance
- Sean Fleming TD, Minister of State at the Department of Finance, with responsibility for financial services, credit unions and insurance
- François Villeroy de Galhau, Governor of Banque de France
- Mairead McGuinness, EU Commissioner for Financial Stability, Financial Services and the Capital Markets Union
- Verena Ross, Chair of European Securities and Markets Authority
- Martin Moloney, Secretary General of International Organization of Securities Commissions
Speaking ahead of the conference, Governor Gabriel Makhlouf said: “The financial services landscape in Ireland and across Europe is changing and the Central Bank wants to be front-footed in its response to the change. To achieve that we need, among other things, to be well-connected with our stakeholders, so that we understand each other’s expectations. This week’s conference is an opportunity to bring together diverse perspectives to discuss and debate some of the important challenges and opportunities facing the financial system and consumers.”
Mairead McGuinness, EU Commissioner for Financial services, financial stability and Capital Markets Union, said: “This conference organised by the Central Bank of Ireland is timely as we work to build a financial system for the future that is resilient, dynamic and sustainable, and that delivers for both consumers and businesses. A new European financial landscape has emerged and is continuing to evolve. Ireland’s financial sector is part of that evolution and is a significant EU financial centre. The financial system plays a key part in an evolving EU, one that innovates to meet the needs of citizens and businesses, cognisant of our vulnerabilities and the need to build a more resilient and sustainable European economy. I look forward to engaging with delegates and hearing from diverse perspectives during the conference.”
