Holdings of Irish Long-Term Government Bonds

Key Points:

  • The nominal value outstanding of government bonds increased by €3.2 billion to €139.2 billion in May 2019, largely due to a new €4 billion bond issuance.
  • Within the next five years, €57.4 billion of government bonds will mature, of which non-residents hold 59.2 per cent.
  • Estimated non-resident holdings increased by €3.4 billion to €81.5 billion in May.
  • Credit Institutions and the Central Bank account for the largest amount of Irish-resident holdings, at €53 billion. This equates to 92 per cent of the resident total.
