Introduction to Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) Managers
This section is intended to help users access all information relevant to the regulation of AIF Managers (AIFM)
AIFM means legal persons whose regular business is managing one or more Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) schemes.
The AIFM shall be either:
- An external manager, which is the legal person appointed by the AIF or on behalf of the AIF and which, through that appointment, is responsible for managing the AIF; or
- Where the legal form of the AIF permits an internal management and where the AIF’s governing body chooses not to appoint an external AIFM, the AIF itself, which shall then be authorised as the AIFM.
An AIFM is authorised under the European Communities (Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive) Regulations 2013 (“the Regulations”) to engage in Portfolio Management and Risk Management services of AIFs. An AIFM below the defined thresholds in accordance with Regulation 4(2), must be registered with the Central Bank.
